King Farouk Rest-house at Giza

See the rest-house location map here.

In 1869, Khedive Ismail, son of Ibrihim Pasha, built a rest-house next to the Great Pyramid, on the Giza Plateau, on top of an old cemetary. That rest-house was the site of many receptions. See this linked picture, taken in 1930 at a reception for Queen Elizabeth of Belgium.

In 1944, King Farouk demolished the old resthouse and built his own rest house in 1946 (one of many he had built). Mustapha Fahmy Pasha was the architect (Chief Architect of Royal Palaces 1930-1952 - see picture here).

In 1993 it was being used as a cafeteria and police station. In 2000 there were suggestions, in a Giza Management plan, that it should be restored into a Cultural Center for the Giza Plateau. However, this has not happened, and there is now serious interior damage making it unsafe. Current plans are for it are not known.
