Bird Tomb of Neferherenptah at Saqqara
The Tomb of Neferherenptah is located
on the southern side of the Causeway
of Unis (Unas) at
Saqqara, Egypt. It is also known as the "Bird Sketch
Tomb" and
belonged to Neferherenptah, whose title was the "Head
of the Hairdressers of the Great House" in the 5th Dynasty.
This tomb was excavated by Ahmed
Moussa from 1964 to 1972. It is among a group
of tombs which have a similar kind of layout. Neferherenptah's
tomb is in a slightly elevated position and lies
to the west of the Mastaba of Mehu.
The Tomb of Neferherenptah has one
chamber, accessible by a staircase. It lies
just beneath the slope of the Unas Pyramid. Inside the
entrance of the right-hand side wall, there are five
registers of reliefs, some of which are in preliminary
sketch prior to carving, that show the preparation of
food, calving of cattle, and
the men who were cattle herders. Other scenes show the
milking of a cow, and retainers bringing wine glasses
as offerings to Neferherenptah. The "bird" scenes
show the netting and caging of birds, and a flock of birds
flying up from papyrus reeds in the Nile River.
